MEDITERRANEAN LANDSCAPE

Though the Mediterranean Landscape style evolved over centuries in southern Europe, it has found recent favor in Santa Barbara, due to the similarity in climate and colors, plus the penchant for entertaining outdoors. Further, this style nicely complements an architectural sensibility derived from Spanish influences. When wrapped around an imposing mansion, this landscape is often formal in character, with everything symmetrically balanced around a central focus, such as a large fountain or pool or staircase. However, this style of landscape can also be adapted to enhance a smaller modern home with lavish drifts of drought tolerant plants from around the world. What is basic to any Mediterranean design is the use of built structures, like walls, pergollas and arbors as the framework on which to drape the plants. These structures also create a respite of shade.
